CUSTOMS EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR REPLACING BONDS LOST AT WORLD TRADE CENTER

The U.S. Customs Service said Monday it will extend the deadline to August 12 for importers wishing to replace bonds that were destroyed at the World Trade Center.

Customs had originally set a deadline for June 12 for importers to apply for continuous bond coverage on bonds destroyed at the agency’s New York Seaport and Regional Port offices in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Importers are to send copies of current bonds filed to two agency offices in New York and New Jersey.

“Various trade associations advised Customs that additional time would be required for their members to comply with the procedures set forth,” Customs said. “An additional 60 days should be allowed for submission of the prescribed bond information.”

Questions regarding operational issues may be directed to the Office of Field Operations, (202) 927-0360. Questions about specific bonds may be directed to the Customs Bond Unit, (201) 443-0234.
