UNITED WILL HALT FREIGHTER SERVICE
United Airlines will halt its transpacific DC-10-30 freighter operation Dec. 24, following three years of significant operating losses.
United said its four DC-10 freighters never met reliability or profitability goals. The decision to close the cargo operation comes after United decided to retire its remaining three DC-10 passenger planes as part of an overall effort to improve schedule reliability and to reduce maintenance costs.
“United remains committed to the cargo business and will accommodate shippers' needs worldwide using our growing cargo friendly fleet of widebody aircraft, including 51 Boeing 747s, 44 Boeing 777s and 53 Boeing 767s,” said Jim Hartigan, vice president in charge of United Cargo.
