U.S. CUSTOMS EXTENDS WOOL DUTY REFUND CLAIM UNTIL END OF YEAR
U.S. Customs has extended the deadline to file a wool refund claim for calendar year 2000 until Dec. 31, 2002.
The original deadline was set for Dec. 31, 2001. Customs said the deadline extension is needed to “reflect the fact that proposed legislation is currently pending before Congress which would significantly alter the scope of section 505 (of the 2000 Trade and Development Act) in regard to the amount of payment manufacturers would be eligible to receive, as well as the documents that a manufacturer would need to file to the entitled to a refund, and in part, because of the destruction of records at the New York Customshouse on Sept. 11, 2001.”
Customs said if legislation is not passed or is “self-effectuating,” it will inform potential claimants about how to speed up their refunds under the current law.
Meanwhile, wool duty refund documentation should be sent to U.S. Customs, Office of Field Operations, Wool Duty Refund Unit, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, 5th Floor, Washington, D.C. 20229.
