æAPL New YorkÆ makes maiden call at Port of New York-New Jersey

The newly christened 965-foot containership 'APL New York' has made its first visit to its namesake city, calling at the New York Container Terminal on Staten Island, N.Y.

One month in service, the 5,040-TEU ship is the newest and largest vessel in APL's eight-vessel New York Express (NYX) service.

NYX is a weekly Asia/U.S. East Coast service jointly operated by the New World Alliance, which includes APL, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and Hyundai Merchant Marine.

'The 'APL New York' underscores our desire to upsize the vessels we use in linking the U.S. East Coast to Asia through the Panama Canal,' said Robert Sappio, head of APL's TransPacific Trade division.

Built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Ltd., in South Korea, the 'APL New York' was christened April 22 and sailed from Shanghai April 27 on its maiden voyage.

At a top speed of 25 knots, the vessel made the passage in 22 days.
