MarAd office shuffle focuses on infrastructure, environment
Sean Connaughton, head of the U.S. Maritime Administration, on Monday formally announced a reorganization of the agency designed to streamline operations and expand the agency’s role in several key maritime issues.
The administrator created a new office dedicated to helping industry comply with safety, security and environmental regulations. The Intermodal System Development Office will address port and inland transportation system development to reduce congestion and improve freight mobility.
MarAd will also open Gateway Offices across the country to work in the field with the maritime industry, as well as state and local governments to help coordinate infrastructure investment and other policies to improve goods movement on high volume transport lanes.
Connaughton has widely previewed the moves in public appearances around the country during recent months.
