V.O. Chidambaranar Port sees growth in container traffic

The southeast Indian port set a record for container volumes record in March, handling a total of 61,390 TEUs during the month.

   V.O. Chidambaranar Port, located in southeastern India, set a container handling record in March with a throughput of 61,390 TEUs for the month, Tuticorin Ship Agents’ Association President Joe Viallavarayar said.
   Terminal operator PSA Sical, a joint venture between PSA India and Sical Logistics, said its container terminal at the port also achieved its highest ever monthly throughput in March, handling 50,225 TEUs.
   The port currently has two container terminals, according to V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust.
   PSA Sical operates the container terminal at berth 7, while Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminals Mumbai operates the container terminal at berth 8.
   Container exports at V.O. Chidambaranar Port include cotton, yarn, handlooms, machinery, seafood, granite and coir pith, which are exported to Europe, North America and almost all Asian countries. Container imports, which primarily come from Europe and East Asian countries, include cotton, metal scrap, waste paper, cotton fiber, chemicals, metal and rubber products.
   In addition to containerized cargo, the port imports thermal and industrial coal, fertilizer, fire resistant materials, timber logs, copper concentrate, salt and other miscellaneous goods. Additional exports include construction materials, raw sugar, granite stone and other goods.
