Holt plans massive solar installation at port

Gloucester Marine Terminal in Gloucester, N.J said it is partnering with SunPower Corp. to build what it claims will be the largest rooftop solar installation in North America.

A solar panel is guided into place Tuesday by officials involved with Riverside Renewable Energy, LLC, which will be the largest rooftop solar panel installation in North America. The project is situated atop refrigerated warehouses at the Gloucester Marine Terminal in Gloucester City, N.J.

The 1.1 million-square-foot project, known as Riverside Renewable Energy, will be located on the roof of the terminal's refrigerated warehouse near the Walt Whitman Bridge on the Delaware River.

It will be capable of generating nine megawatts of electricity, enough to power 80 percent of the terminal’s power demand or 1,500 homes. Costing $42 million, the project calls for the installation of 27,528 photovoltaic rooftop solar panels.

The Gloucester Marine Terminal, is owned by the Holt family.

'Riverside Renewable Energy is good for the environment because it generates clean, non-polluting energy from the sun,' said Tom Holt Sr., chairman emeritus of Holt Logistics Corp. 'But it's also good for our business, because we will have the benefit of reliable, affordable electricity to operate the terminal.'
