DUTCH SHIP CATCHES FIRE OUTSIDE NEW YORK HARBOR

A fire broke out Monday in the engine room of a Dutch cargo vessel, the 370-foot Pijlgracht, about 17 miles southeast of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, outside of New York harbor. The ship had delivered cocoa beans to Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Pijlgracht’s 14-member crew extinguished the blaze in about an hour. One crewman who suffered third-degree burns over one-quarter of his body was flown by helicopter to Staten Island University Hospital.
