CMA CGM ORDERS 8 CONTAINERSHIPS OF 6,500-TEU
CMA CGM has ordered eight containerships of 6,500-TEU
capacity.
The new vessels will have a speed of 26 knots and will be substantially
larger than other ships of the fleet of the French carrier. At present, the biggest
containerships of CMA CGM have capacities of about 4,000 TEUs.
Four of the new vessels will be owned by CMA CGM, using the French
tax-lease system. The other four will be owned by German owners and chartered to CMA CGM.
The ships will be delivered between May and December 2001. Five of the
new vessels will be built by the Hanjin shipyard and three by the Daewoo shipyard.
CMA CGM is the latest carrier to have ordered vessels of more than
6,000 TEUs. Other shipping lines with orders for ships of this type include Maersk Line,
Hanjin Shipping, Hyundai, Sea-Land Service and P&O Nedlloyd.
