FedEx Freight settles suit for $500,000

FedEx Freight agreed to pay $500,000 to settle a class action employment discrimination lawsuit filed by 20 dockworkers who alleged they were denied promotions and assignments at a St. Louis terminal based on their race, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

As part of the agreement, the Memphis-based less-than-truckload carrier will also provide reports on future promotion practices for part-time dockworkers to full-time and supervisory positions.

The alleged violations occurred several years ago at American Freightways, which was acquired by FedEx Corp. in 2001. FedEx assumed the liabilities of the old company.

UPS, which competes with other FedEx subsidiaries in small package delivery, also is fighting a lawsuit brought by thousands of current and former minority workers who allege racial discrimination. The suit seeks millions of dollars in damages.
