Arrests at Port of Kaohsiung over container volume fix

Two officials from the Port of Kaohsiung were arrested over the weekend for allegedly falsifying the Taiwanese port's container volumes to reach a lucrative government target, according to various local news outlets.

The arrests followed overnight questioning of more than 50 people from the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau and various shipping companies.

The Port of Kaohsiung, once the world's third-largest container port, is now in eighth position and according to the original statistics broke through the 10-million TEU barrier for first time last year with a throughput of 10.26 million TEU, up 4.9 percent year on year.

The Kaohsiung Harbour Bureau said in a statement that it would cooperate fully with the investigators.
