NYK Logistics (UK) opens pharmaceutical center

NYK Logistics (UK) Ltd. has opened a dedicated facility for pharmaceutical storage and distribution at its complex in Northampton, England.

The 175,000-square-foot facility has been converted into a purpose-built 1,000-pallet cold store at which an additional 16,000 pallets can be placed in temperature-controlled ambient storage. To monitor temperatures the building is equipped with 46 radio frequency transmitters. The facility is also fully equipped with an emergency spillage area, and employees have received emergency-response training.

'Pharmaceutical manufacturers are increasingly concentrating on core R&D, manufacturing and marketing activities and entrusting their storage and distribution to specialist third parties such as NYK,” said General Manager Larry Walsh.

'For obvious reasons, the pharmaceutical industry is heavily regulated, with both manufacturers and their suppliers being required to demonstrate adherence to strict quality, safety and security procedures. The investment in GP3 underpins our ability to do this and our commitment to the pharmaceutical sector.”

NYK Logistics (UK) was established in April 2006 when NYK Logistics (UK) Manufacturing & Retail Ltd. (formerly UCIL) merged with NYK Logistics (UK) Consumer & Retail Ltd. (formerly New Wave Logistics UK). The company has some 40 offices and warehouses in the U.K., about 4,500 employees and generated revenue of about '336 million in 2006.
