Two U.S. inland waterway groups unite

Two U.S. inland waterway transport groups have merged to create the Waterways Council.

The two groups to form the new Arlington, Va.-based council are Waterways Work! and the Association for the Development of Inland Navigation in America’s Ohio Valley.

Barry Palmer, president and chief executive officer for the Waterways Council, said the move is “an important step toward streamlining the critical message that our nation’s waterways infrastructure — locks and dams — must be well maintained in order to continue to maximize our waterways transportation and safeguard our national and global competitiveness.”

Berdon Lawrence, chairman of Kirby Corp. in Houston, was named chairman of the Waterways Council.

The council is supported by more than 250 waterways carriers, shippers, port authorities, shipping associations and waterways advocacy groups.
