NYK containership saves fishermen off North Carolina

A crewman aboard the 50,500-ton 'Sophia Britannia,' a Nippon Yusen Kaisha containership, sighted a man floating in rough seas near a lifeboat off the coast of North Carolina last Friday. After alerting the U.S. Coast Guard, the ship rescued a 41-year-old fisherman whose vessel had foundered.

The Coast Guard was able to rescue a second man in the lifeboat by helicopter. Both survivors were 'slightly wounded,' NYK said in a statement. They came from a fishing boat that had set out from Murrells Inlet, S.C., before encountering stormy weather. A third man from the lifeboat could not be found and is presumed to be missing at sea.
