DHL cuts U.S. jobs
Overnight express delivery company DHL is laying off 2,870 U.S. employees, 6.5 percent of its domestic workforce, as it works to absorb newly acquired Airborne Express, according to wire service reports.
Deutsche Post bought Seattle-based Airborne's ground delivery network for $1.2 billion last month to give DHL better ground distribution capability in the U.S. market. The job cuts are expected to save the company about $87 million per year, Reuters reported.
DHL said Airborne would take over pick-up and delivery tasks now handled by its staff at 169 package centers.
