Eight of the 19 crew members on board the Fortune Life were rescued as the ship sank in the South China Sea on Friday, and the Philippine Coast Guard continues to search for survivors of the wreck, according to news outlet Splash 24/7.
The general cargo vessel Fortune Life sank about 130 nautical miles west of Luzon Island in the northernmost part of the Philippines on Friday, according to reports from maritime news outlet Splash 24/7.
Of the ship’s 19-member crew, eight were rescued at the time, but the remaining 11 are still missing and feared dead. The crew was comprised of 18 Chinese nationals and one Vietnamese.
The Fortune Life was en route from Taiwan to Malaysia when its cargo of 7,500 tons of feldspar – a large and abundant group of minerals distinguished by the presence of alumina and silica in their chemistry – shifted, causing the vessel to capsize.
Splash 24/7 said the Philippine Coast Guard continues to search the area for the missing seafarers, but has been unable to locate them as of Sunday afternoon.
