Grocery distributors face possible delivery delays in Mid-Atlantic
Deliveries to 350 Giant Food and Safeway stores in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area could be disrupted as soon as Wednesday if grocery workers do not agree on a new contract and go on strike.
Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union will vote today on a contract to replace the one that expires tonight. If workers opt to strike, truck drivers are expected to encounter picket lines and stores that may operate with reduced staffs and hours, making it difficult to get commodities unloaded.
Grocery workers recently went back to work in California after a months-long strike at Albertson’s and Safeway subsidiary Vons.
