PORT OF SAVANNAH ORDERS TWO SUPER POST-PANAMAX CRANES

The Georgia Port Authority has ordered two super post-Panamax cranes, with an option to buy two additional cranes, for its Port of Savannah's Garden City Terminal.

The cranes, ordered from Konescranes VLC, represent the largest crane size manufactured in the market. Scheduled for commissioning in February 2003, the cranes will have a 72-short-ton lifting capacity and will be able to handle ships 22 containers wide. The port authority said the cranes will be 20 feet higher and have hoist speeds 50-percent faster than existing cranes at the Savannah containerport.

The port authority said last week it handled a record 94,622 TEUs of cargo in August, an 8-percent increase over the year-earlier period. After two months of its current fiscal year, the port authority has handled nearly 188,000 TEUs, up 9.8 percent over the year-earlier period.
