Railcar maker shutting plant
FreightCar America Inc. said it will close its manufacturing facility located in Johnstown, Pa., which employs about 390.
The Chicago-based company said it was shuttering the factory in favor of cheaper manufacturing at other plants. It will keep open an administrative office in Johnstown.
Chris Ragot, president and chief executive officer, said the decision to close the plant came after negotiations with a union failed over “an agreement that would have allowed us to continue to operate the facility in a cost-effective way.”
The company expects the manufacturing capacity at its other two existing plants, in Danville, Ill., and Roanoke, Va., to be sufficient to meet its requirements for the next several years.
FreightCar America manufactures coal cars, bulk commodity cars, flat cars, mill gondola cars, intermodal cars, coil steel cars and motor vehicle carriers.
