Port of Portland terminal exceeds 1995 container record
The Pacific Northwest port of Portland last week broke its volume record by handling more than 329,750 TEUs in less than a year at its Terminal 6 facility, exceeding the previous record set in 1995.
By the end of 2003, the port predicts it will add another 5,000 to 10,000 TEUs to the earlier record.
Port marine director Sam Ruda said that the momentum has been creased “for another year of growth in 2004.”
Ruda noted that, in the coming year, the port will be adding new container yard handing equipment at Terminal 6, and will likely be requesting port commission approval to purchase at least one new crane to work today’s larger containerships.
According to ComPairData, the global liner shipping database, five transpacific container services now call at Portland, including the Philippines, Micronesia & Orient Navigation Co. “Micronesia” service and the “Seaspac” service of CCNI-Compania Chilena de Navegacion Interoceanica, Maruba and Compania Latino Americana de Navegacion.
