Lufthansa leases World Airways freighter for China route
World Airways will fly shipments between Nuremberg, Germany and Xian, China for Lufthansa Cargo under a 14-month, full-service air charter arrangement that begins in October.
World said it will operate a DC-10-30 freighter for Lufthansa until December and then substitute an MD-11F aircraft to better match the rest of Lufthansa’s fleet. The estimated value of the contract is $23 million.
Lufthansa has employed World on short-term service contracts, such as the current Hong Kong to Frankfurt, Germany service, but the new deal is the first long-term deal between the airlines.
Lufthansa, like many airlines, is working hard to expand China service. It also recently said it would start service at the end of October to Guangzhou.
