NY/NJ AIRFREIGHT VOLUMES DECLINE 16%

      The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported that, for the first quarter of 2002, the region registered a decrease of over 16 percent in airfreight volume over the same period for 2001.

   International cargo tonnage moved through JFK International Airport, LaGuardia and Newark International totaled 271,000 tons in 2002, a decrease of 16% when compared to 323,000 tons in the same period in 2001.

   “The industry continues to hold its breath with forecasters predicting an upturn in the market either late in 2002 or early in 2003,” PANYNJ said.

   PANYNJ reported that the value of goods processed through their three airports amounted to $28 billion, a decrease when compared to the same period last year, which processed $36 billion of goods.

   For the first quarter, the district processed 94,000 tons of export cargo, valued at $11 billion and 177,000 tons of imports valued at $176 billion.
