White House lifts some sanctions on Libya
The Bush Administration said it has removed selected U.S. sanctions against Libya involving travel and residence:
The State Department has rescinded the restriction on the use of American passports in travel to Libya.
The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said, “U.S. persons are authorized to engage in transactions relating to travel to, from and within Libya, and residence and maintenance within Libya.”
However, payment for such transactions “must be in cash, or by debit or credit to accounts held at banks that are not in Libya and not entities of the Government of Libya,” OFAC said.
Flights to and from Libya by U.S. air carriers, “code-sharing involving flights to and from Libya, or flights to or from the U.S. by Libyan air carriers remain prohibited,” OFAC said.
