U.S.-flag reserve fleet freighter heads to Texas for scrapping

The 1946-built U.S.-flag freighter “Mormacdawn” was towed from the James River Reserve Fleet Friday for scapping in Brownsville, Texas.

Since September, eight ships, including the “Mormacdawn,” have been removed from the fleet.

Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said it was a “high priority” for the administration to scrap obsolete ships in the federal government’s James River Reserve Fleet. The Maritime Administration is acting on a statutory deadline of Sept, 30, 2006, to dispose 25 ships.
