MEXICO TO LIMIT PORTS OF ENTRY FOR TEXTILE-RELATED PRODUCTS

Mexico has extended the effective date for modifying existing regulations that specifically limit ports of entry through which textile-related merchandise may be imported into the country.

The modifications, which were to have taken effect Tuesday, state that textiles classified in all subheadings of chapters 50-63 of the Harmonized Tariff System are only authorized to be released in these Mexico Customs ports: Port of Ciudad Juarez; the Port of Manzanillo; the Port of Matamoros; the Port of Mexico; the Port of Nuevo Laredo; and the Port of Progreso.

Due to outcries from the trade community and other groups effected by the short notice of the proposed change, the effective date of the modifications has been extended through separate correspondence by the Secretaria de Economia and Mexican Customs by either 10 or 30 days from the date of publication, or until August 10 or 30.

In addition, the International Airport of Ciudad de Mexico, the Port of Hidalgo, the Port of Colombia, the Port of Veracruz and the Port of Tijuana have been added as ports through which textile-related merchandise may be imported. Also, companies participating in the PITEX or maquila programs may be exempted from these modifications' requirements.
