The Singapore facility will include the company’s first fully automated express parcel sorting and processing system in South Asia.
DHL Express has revealed plans for a new South Asia Hub within Changi Airfreight Center at Singapore’s Changi Airport.
The new facility, in line with DHL Express’ initiatives to improve network connectivity, boasts a total investment of S$140 million ($102 million or 85 million euros), the largest infrastructural amount invested by DHL Express in Singapore.
The 23,600-square-meter facility will include the company’s first fully automated express parcel sorting and processing system in South Asia. Once completed, it will handle more than 628 tons of freight a day and process as many as 14,000 shipments per hour. The carrier’s current Singapore facility handles up to 225 tons per day at a speed of 2,400 shipments per hour.
“The DHL Express South Asia Hub reinforces our global multi-hub strategy,” said Jerry Hsu, chief executive officer for DHL Express Asia Pacific, in a statement. “In Asia Pacific, DHL Express’ four hubs – Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore – link to over 70 DHL Express gateways located throughout the region.”
DHL’s South Asia network is served by more than 40 planes covering 40 countries and territories, and uses about 690 commercial flights per day throughout the region.
