Horizon Lines adds cranes in San Juan
Charlotte, N.C.-based Jones Act operator Horizon Lines has replaced two cranes by newer larger handling equipment at its container terminal in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The two Paceco units, shipped from Jamaica by barge, replaced two older, smaller cranes. The newer cranes are taller, allowing them to work vessels six container tiers high, and also have a longer reach across the ship. These newer cranes also have an increased weight capacity to 40 tons, the carrier said.
Horizon spent some $3 million to acquire and transport these cranes and equipment from Jamaica. After refurbishing and commissioning, the new equipment was ready for use this week.
