PSA GROUP SEES CONTINUED REBOUND
PSA Corp.'s Singapore container terminals handled 1.44 million TEUs in May, the highest monthly throughput in 21 months, and a 10.3-percent increase over May 2001.
For the first five months of 2002, throughput for PSA's Singapore terminals improved 9.0 percent. This was due to increases in transshipment volumes across all major markets, including China and South Asia. Local throughput saw export growth rise 7.7 percent, reflecting a gradual recovery of the local export market, PSA said.
PSA's overseas container terminals registered a 181-percent growth in June, which includes volumes handled at Hesse-Noord Natie, Belgium, which PSA acquired in April. The growth was also helped by a rebound in regional trade and the addition of port calls at Aden Container Terminal in Yemen and Fuzhou Container Terminal in China.
Overall, the PSA Group saw growth of 39.1 percent for May, with a year-to-date increase4 of 24.1 percent in throughput.
