NS TO BUILD INTERMODAL TERMINAL AT PHILADELPHIA NAVY YARD

Norfolk Southern Corp. said Thursday it will build a new $16-million intermodal terminal at the former Philadelphia Navy Yard.

The terminal will initially occupy about 50 acres of the more than 160 acres of property at the naval yard committed to support intermodal and non-intermodal rail operations.

Work is expected to begin later this year and be completed by 2004. The terminal will be able to handle 60,000 lifts annually.

The Norfolk, Va.-based railroad has recently opened intermodal terminals in Harrisburg, Pa.; Austell and Savannah, Ga.; and Cleveland, and has expanded terminals in Chicago.
