NACPC adds over 750 chassis to ‘gray’ pools

The North American Chassis Pool Cooperative currently offers more than 8,500 chassis in three contributory gray pools: MCCP, COCP and SACP.

The North American Chassis Pool Cooperative (NACPC) has finalized purchase orders that will add 750 new chassis the inventory of its “gray” chassis pools in the Gulf region and Wilmington, N.C.
A lack of chassis, which are used to transport marine containers between ports, rail yards and cargo destinations such as warehouses, is one of many contributing factors in congestion at U.S. ports. A gray chassis pool, meaning any qualified motor carrier is able to use it, started up at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in March, and another was scheduled to begin operations at the Port of New York/New Jersey this fall.
Contributory gray pools help to ensure an adequate supply of chassis for all motor users, eliminate duplicative costs, and maximize the use of limited space at port and/or inland intermodal locations since individual operators no longer need their own chassis storage facilities.
The all-new chassis feature anti-lock brake systems, radial tires and LED lights, NACPC said in a statement.
The cooperative already took delivery of 100 chassis to be deployed in the Gulf region and will receive between 300 and 350 more by mid-November. It also took delivery of 300 standard chassis as well as 9 tri-axle chassis for its Wilmington, N.C .pool in July. The 309 Wilmington chassis will also feature auto-inflation functionality.
“This is a significant development for the organization who, at the onset, solely offered chassis that they leased,” said NACPC. “With the purchase of these 750+ chassis NACPC now presents greater flexibility to clients and ensures a higher quality product.”
“When we founded NACPC we said the quality of available chassis needed to change,” added NACPC President Dave Manning. “With the purchase of these new chassis we’re making great strides toward moving the industry in that direction.”
In addition to elevating their product in order to offer optimal performance to motor carriers, Manning also says that NACPC is helping to keep the motor carriers’ drivers safe on the road. “The top violations drivers face at roadside inspections have to do with lights, tires & brakes. We’re innovating in all three categories, keeping carriers compliant, fewer chassis placed out of service & drivers safer on the roads.”
Founded in 2012, NACPC currently offers more than 8,500 chassis in three contributory gray pools: the Midwest Consolidated Chassis Pool (MCCP), Chicago & Ohio Valley Consolidated Chassis Pool (COCP), and South Atlantic Consolidated Chassis Pool (SACP).
