Intermodal logistics provider buys 200 units on first year anniversary.
Tiger Cool Express is increasing its capacity to provide intermodal transport for perishable shipments with the order of 200 53-foot refrigerated containers from Quingdao CIMC Special Reefer Co. Ltd., in China.
The acquisition will bring the company’s fleet to 434 refrigerated containers, not including an option for 300 additional units.
Deliveries will begin in early May, the Overland Park, Kan.-based rail logistics provider said last week.
Tiger Cool’s existing reefer fleet was manufactured by Hyundai Translead in Mexico. Tiger Cool owns 30 percent of its equipment and leases the rest.
The intermodal forwarder, which began operations a year ago, delivers empty containers for customers for loading, books transport on Class I railroads, and delivers loads from the destination terminal to customers’ loading docks.
It said the CIMC containers are 800 pounds lighter than previously manufactured domestic intermodal refrigerated containers and will be outfitted with Carrier Transicold refrigeration units, as well as remote temperature sensing and control technology.
