Dominican authorities arrest customs employees

The Customs Department in the Dominican Republic has ordered the arrest of at least 27 of its employees in connection with an ongoing investigation into misdeclarations of goods being sent into free trade zones.

A report in Dominican Today said containers moving through Rio Haina and Boca Chica were being declared as raw materials, but were discovered to have goods that included products ranging from beans to alcoholic beverages and electronic appliances.

The report said the investigation is being managed by customs authorities with the support of the military and the Police and National Investigations Department.
