South Florida warehouse break-ins increasing

There has been another spate of cargo warehouse break-ins in the Miami area recently, prompting warnings to shipping and logistics services companies to review their security procedures.

Greg Kritz, the regional vice president in Miami for the international insurance brokers Roanoke Trade told of meeting of the Florida Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association about the spate of break-ins and warned companies to be on the alert.

'This is something we thought had been taken care of a few years ago,' Kritz said, but he added industrial burglars are back at it in South Florida.

In some cases thieves are coming in through doors, but at other times they will go directly through a wall into a warehouse.

Kritz urged the companies at the meeting to make sure their alarm systems and other security features are functioning properly'and being responded to when an alarm goes off. He also said companies need to follow standard practices like screening employees carefully and to make sure alarm systems are not being bypassed.
