Hemmingsen takes charge at APM Terminals

Claus V. Hemmingsen, the former managing director of A.P. Moller in Hong Kong, has been appointed chief executive officer of APM Terminals, the Danish group’s container terminal business.

The position of CEO is new at APM Terminals, and forms part of a reorganization designed to strengthen its management. APM Terminals was established in 2000 as a stand-alone division within the A.P. Moller group, and is now the world’s third largest port operator when measured in TEU traffic.

Peder Sondergaard, vice president and chief operating officer of APM Terminals, now reports to Hemmingsen.

APM Terminals continues to expand its terminal business around the world. Work started this summer on the future Suez Canal Container Terminal, a 50/50 joint venture between A.P. Moller and ECT. APM Terminals has also received a provisional permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build and operate a 560-acre container terminal on the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, Va.
