AB Ports to build new coal terminal
Associated British Ports, the United Kingdom’s biggest port operator, announced plans last week for a 44.5 million pound ($80.1 million) expansion of its coal terminal at the Port of Immingham as part of a 10-year, 400 million pound development program for its 21 ports, according to British media accounts.
The company said a larger coal terminal is needed at Immingham to handle the surge in coal imports and prevent offloading delays that are driving up its costs. After the expansion is completed the terminal will be able to handle 7.5 million tons of coal per year.
AB Ports also pledged to build a second deepwater berth at the port by mid-2006.
