P&O NEDLLOYD SWITCHES TO INTEGRAL REEFER CONTAINERS

P&O Nedlloyd is investing $200 million in new integral reefer containers that will replace old so-called “blown air” reefer containers used in its Australasian container services to and from Europe and the U.S.

In those trades, the Anglo-Dutch carrier is also moving away from specialized containerships with blown air reefer capacity, to adopt the more widespread integral reefer method. Integral reefer containers contain their own electrical refrigeration unit and are seen as more flexible in their use.

P&O Nedlloyd will take delivery of 6,000 20-foot and 8,500 40-foot high-cube reefer containers between December this year and November 2002.

P&O Nedlloyd said that this represents “the single largest order in the history of the container refrigeration industry.”
