UNION PACIFIC, NORFOLK SOUTHERN START MEXICAN INTERMODAL SERVICE

Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railroad have announced a new expedited intermodal service from U.S. eastern cities to Loredo, Texas, and then on to Mexico City and other destinations in Mexico.

The service trims up to three days from current transit times. It begins with Norfolk Southern in Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., Jacksonville, Fla., and Miami. Norfolk Southern then gives Mexico-bound shipments over to Union Pacific in Memphis.

Shipments may also originate in Union Pacific’s intermodal facility in Marion, Ark.

Union Pacific interchanges shipments with Transportacion Ferroviana Mexicana at Laredo. Customers have the option of arranging local drayage, or having Union Pacific arrange delivery once containers arrive in Mexico City.

“Our latest partnership provides a reliable, secure and economical alternative to long-haul trucking on congested highways,” said Mike McCellan, Union Pacific’s vice president of intermodal marketing.
