FMC investigates possible violations by Nick International Shipping

The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission has initiated an investigation into the alleged illegal shipping activities of a Bronx, N.Y.-based non-vessel-operating common carrier.

The NVO, Nick International Shipping, is operated by Olimpia Sandoval (also known as Marisela Cordero), president, and Nick Sandoval, vice president. From at least Aug. 14, 2000, FMC investigators allege the NVO “knowingly and willfully” operated without a published tariff, bond and ocean transportation intermediary license for numerous shipments in the trade between the United States and the Dominican Republic.

In addition to a public hearing, the FMC ordered the case be assigned to an in-house administrative law judge for review. The judge is expected to make an initial decision on the case by Feb. 8, 2005. The final decision of the commission will be issued by June 8, 2005.

If the agency proves wrongdoing, Nick International Shipping and its two corporate officers could face a civil penalty of not more than $30,000 for each violation knowingly and willfully committed, and not more than $6,000 for other violations.
