Olympia’s docks get boost from logs, Russian aluminum
The Port of Olympia has worked to position itself as a log load center and a distribution point for inbound Russian aluminum.
A vessel chartered by Toho Marine Service Co. recently moved 1.88 million board feet of logs for Sumitomo Forestry Seattle on July 7. The last Toho Marine vessel to call on log cargo for Sumitomo was in 1996.
On July 6, Toko Line transported 1.2 million board feet of logs for Mitsubishi International to Japan.
On July 8, Olympia unloaded 11.17 metric tons of aluminum t-bars and ingots from Vanino. Russia. The aluminum will be transported by rail and truck to Pacific Northwest and California destinations.
“Diversifying marine terminal cargoes is a key objective of the port’s long-range plan,” said Olympia port commissioner Bob Van Schoorl. “These vessels demonstrate that the port is accomplishing this goal.”
