Second ship calls at underutilized Ceres Paragon terminal

Second ship calls at underutilized Ceres Paragon terminal

The “NYK Pasion,” a 2,500-TEU ship operated by NYK Line on the Europe/South America route, called at the Ceres Paragon terminal in Amsterdam Thursday.

For the Ceres Paragon terminal, 50-percent owned by the NYK group, the vessel’s call may indicate a lessening of its problems of underutilization. Pieter Bas Bredius, chief executive officer of the terminal, said the NYK ship was the second vessel in less than two months handled at the terminal.

The Ceres Paragon facility features an original “indented berth” design, which allows vessels to be worked with shore cranes on both sides. Four cranes were used for the NYK ship. The terminal said this handling technique resulted in a halving of the normal production time required for a similar number of moves at other European terminals.

“It is also unique, as there is nowhere in the world where such technology is presently available,” Ceres Paragon said in a statement.
