FAA PROPOSES FINE AGAINST UNITED AIRLINES

The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a $72,000 fine against United Airlines for offering a damaged, unmarked and undeclared oxygen generator for shipment by air.

The FAA alleges that the violation of U.S. hazardous materials shipping rules occurred in July last year when United shipped an unexpended oxygen generator from a parts warehouse in San Francisco to Dallas on a FedEx freighter. The shipment was not accompanied by shipping papers or properly packed.

An undeclared shipment of oxygen generators is believed to have caused the crash of a Valujet aircraft that killed more than 100 people in 1997.
