BIMCO STUDY FINDS WORLDWIDE SHORTAGE OF OFFICERS
A manpower study on the worldwide supply and demand for seafarers found a 4-percent shortfall of officers, according to the Baltic and International Maritime Council.
BIMCO, which conducts the study every five years, said the shortfall was similar to the 1995 study.
“The situation will worsen, BIMCO said, “unless training is increased or measures are taken to address the rate at which seafarers leave the industry.”
The study recommended that officer recruitment needs to increase from one trainee in 10 officers to one in seven, or about 1.5 trainees per ship.
