APHIS TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON INTERNATIONAL PLANT PROTECTION RULES

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service will hold a public meeting on Aug. 23 to solicit comments on the development of an international standard concerning plant pest risks with “living modified organisms.”

The International Plant Protection Convention is the standard-setting body for international plant pest issues for the World Trade Organization. In April, the IPPC’s Interim Commission on Phytosanitary Measures recommended that an international standard be completed by April 2004.

APHIS held an earlier meeting on plant pests in living modified organisms in March. A transcript of the meeting is available online at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ppg/pim/standards/lmos.pdf .
