Seaboard Marine opens in Miami, shuts down in Houston

Seaboard Marine, the Miami-based ocean carrier specializing in the Latin America and Caribbean trades, said Thursday it has reopened its Miami operations, but was shutting down its Houston operations, both as a result of Hurricane Rita.

Seaboard shut down its Miami operations Monday afternoon as the Port of Miami closed as a precaution against Hurricane Rita, which passed south of the Florida mainland and caused no significant damages.

'Cargo activities, trucking services and vessel operations have fully resumed at the Port of Miami. There are some ordinary delays in our Miami-based sailing schedules since the seaport was closed for over 36 hours, but we are making every reasonable effort to resume a normal sailing schedule. Three vessels were docked and unloaded (Wednesday). Several more will be worked today and tomorrow. The Florida East Coast Railroad has resumed its normal schedule,' a statement from Seaboard said.

Meanwhile, Seaboard said its Houston facilities, including the Jacintoport terminal, are expected to remain closed Sunday. The port is expected to reopen Sept. 26, at earliest. Customers who normally call Seaboard' Houston office may call any of its other U.S. offices instead. The phone number for the main office in Miami is (305) 863-4444.'
