FAA issues Florida firm hazmat fine

RAE-I.T. Asset Management cited for improperly packaged lithium battery shipment.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a $126,000 civil penalty against Ocala, Fla.-based RAE-I.T. Asset Management for allegedly violating federal hazardous materials transport regulations.
The FAA alleges that on May 24, 2017, the company offered a 36-pound shipment of 220 lithium ion cell phone batteries to UPS for air transport. “The shipment was forbidden because it was not packaged in a manner to prevent sparks or a dangerous evolution of heat,” the agency said.
UPS workers reportedly discovered the shipment upon its arrival at Louisville International Airport.
The FAA said RAE-I.T.’s package failed to include a dangerous goods declaration and was improperly packed and labeled. The agency also alleged RAE-I.T. failed to ensure that each of its employees received required hazmat training.
