South Carolina shrimpers seek relief from imports

The South Carolina Shrimpers’ Association and South Carolina Shrimp Growers Association have asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service for trade adjustment assistance.

The FAS administrator will have the next 40 days to determine whether imports of shrimp significantly contributed to a decline in domestic producer prices of 20 percent or more during marketing year period beginning January 2002 through December 2002.

“If the determination is positive, all shrimp producers in South Carolina will be eligible to apply to the Farm Service Agency for technical assistance at no cost and for adjustment assistance payments,” FAS said.
