ACI REPORT: NORTH AMERICAN AIR CARGO DOWN 29%
Airports Council International said the global economic slowdown and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks helped force worldwide air cargo volumes down 29 percent in September.
A recent ACI report showed double-digit percentage drops in cargo volume in North America (down 29 percent), Latin America and the Caribbean (down 16 percent), Europe (down 15 percent) and Asia/Pacific (down 12 percent). Mideast volumes dropped 7 percent while Africa volumes were flat.
The ACI report showed that Memphis International Airport recorded a 12 percent increase in cargo volume for September, with 235,000 metric tons handled. Other gainers in cargo volumes for September were Shanghai at a growth of 13 percent, Dubai at 5 percent, Guangzhou at 4 percent, and Beijing at 1 percent.
