Lufthansa picks systems integrator for cargo conversion
Lufthansa Cargo has selected Goodrich Corp., Charlotte, N.C., as the general contractor in charge of converting five of its MD-11 aircraft from passenger to freighter mode.
Under the contract, Goodrich will instill its powered conveyer system in the planes and outsource other parts of the conversion, such as cutting a new freight door and gutting the passenger deck.
According to Goodyear, automated cargo systems have never been installed in an MD-11 on an aftermarket basis.
Lufthansa said in September they plan to convert five used aircraft in order to have a uniform freighter fleet.
