Port of Savannah’s box volumes rise 12.7% in April
The Georgia Ports Authority said the Port of Savannah handled 173,415 TEUs in April, up 12.7 percent from the same month last year.
Last month the port opened the initial phase of its Container Berth 8, adding 1,100 feet of dock space. An additional 1,000 feet is scheduled to be available this July.
The port authority, which also operates the Port of Brunswick and the inland barge operations in Bainbridge and Columbus, said it moved 1.7 million tons of cargo in April, a 9.7 percent increase from April 2005.
During the first 10 months of the port’s fiscal year 2006, the port authority handled 1.69 million TEUs, a 15.4 percent rise over the same period last year.
