APM Terminals wins Peru port concession
Peruvian government officials have selected APM Terminals to run Terminal Muelle Norte in the port of Callao.
Callao is the country’s largest port and is only about 10 miles west of Lima.
APM said the port project supports the Peruvian government's initiative to continue to modernize its port infrastructure to meet the country's growing trade needs.
APM Terminals Callao will invest $749 million to modernize and transform the terminal for containers, general cargo, roll/on/roll-off cargo, breakbulk and cruise ships. At full capacity, APM expects the terminal to handle 2.9 million TEUs and 9.9 million tons of non-containerized cargo per year.
Peder Sondergaard, senior vice president and head of new terminals at APM, said the company “is focusing expansion plans on the fast-growing economies around the world and is continually strengthening its Latin American scope of operations. Projects like this enable us to build on our strengths, and facilitate growth in the national and regional economies and trade.'
APM said the concession contract will be signed within the next 30 days and APM Terminal will take over the operations of Muelle Norte 60 days thereafter.
